In this lab, your students will use a spectroscope and read spectral lines to identify elements by their atomic emission from exciting electrons. A simple to use quantum chemistry lab.

 

WHO IS IT FOR?

This flame test lab is perfect for first year chemistry students.

 

HOW TO USE IT

  • Present three different spectral tubes to your students. Either tell them the identity of the element, or have them research based on the spectral line measurements.
  • Present students with a fourth spectral tube, keeping its identity unknown. I like for this to be a repeat of one of the first three elements.
  • I use this after my flame test lab so students can see the spectral lines as a better alternative to the flame test.

  • Spectral tube power supply
  • Spectral tube gas samples (at least three)
