Reviewing isotopes without the classic grid!
In this whole-class chemistry mystery, students analyze 18 unknown isotope samples after a pair of mischievous students swap the labels during a class visit to a research laboratory.
Students must use their knowledge of atomic number, mass number, protons, and neutrons to identify the unknown isotopes, uncover clues, eliminate suspects, and identify the culprit behind the dangerous prank.
As students complete each analysis, they'll practice interpreting isotope information and using the periodic table while working together to crack the case. It's an engaging way to practice isotope calculations and reinforce the relationship between atomic structure and isotope notation.
FEATURES
- Practice isotope calculations involving atomic number, mass number, protons, and neutrons
- Identify unknown isotopes by combining results from two different laboratory analyses

- Students answer questions to uncover clues and eliminate suspects
- Up to 36 student suspects for maximum class participation
- Low-prep activity that's easy to print and implement
- Flexible printing options to save paper and work with any class size
WHAT'S INCLUDED?
- Teacher set up guide
- Chemistry analysis worksheets featuring 18 unknown isotope samples and 36 tests
- 4 pages of student suspect cards, totaling 36 student suspects
- Answer key
WHEN SHOULD I USE THIS?
This activity is perfect for:
- Practicing isotopes and atomic structure
- Reviewing atomic number, mass number, protons, and neutrons
- Reinforcing isotope notation and element identification
- A fun alternative to a traditional isotopes worksheet
- Reviewing before an atomic structure or isotopes assessment
- Early-year chemistry practice
TEACH IT YOUR WAY
Print the suspect cards for a whole-class investigation, use them with small groups, or have students complete the mystery independently. Print two pages per sheet to save paper and create smaller suspect cards for classrooms with fewer students or copy limits.
