Metal ion identification lab, otherwise known as a flame test is always a student favorite. Using Group 1 and Group 2 chloride solutions, students will use a flame test to identify 3 unknowns based on the standard from testing 7 known metal chlorides. All you need is some different chloride solutions, coffee stirrers and Bunsen burners.
WHO IS IT FOR?
This flame test lab is perfect for first year chemistry students.
HOW TO USE IT
- Soak wooden splints in 1M or greater chloride solutions overnight
- Set up three unknowns and have the students color match them to the knowns to determine the metal ion. My kids love the mystery and use it as an excuse to test each ion a few times (any excuse for chemistry is a good one in my book!)
- These unknowns can be all different colors to teach about using knowns to find unknowns
- These unknowns could be all similar colors in order to point out that flame tests aren't the most reliable test.
FEATURES
- Engaging
- Inquiry activity
- Rigorous written conclusion to synthesize thoughts
- Differentiated options for writing conclusion
- Post lab questions to help guide students through concept
WHAT MATERIALS ARE REQUIRED?
- Metal Chlorides (1 M solutions or higher)
- Sodium
- Potassium
- Lithium
- Calcium
- Strontium
- Copper
- Barium
- Wooden splints/coffee stirrers
- Bunsen burners
- Safety equipment
You can use metal chloride salts and wire if you prefer. They typically give a better flame test, but you run a greater risk of melting the salts into the Bunsen burner.
WHAT’S INCLUDED
- Lab activity: pre and post lab questions and a written conclusion
- "How to Write a Chemistry Lab Report"
- Conclusion sentence starter prompt for differentiation
- Answer key with sample responses
