Start your solutions unit in chemistry with this solubility lab where students test four factors that affect solubility of solids. Or use the 2nd version for independent, dependent and control variables in science experiments.

Factors that Affect Solubility Tested in this Lab Activity

1) Surface Area (sugar cube vs. granulated sugar)

2) Temperature (warm water vs. cold water)

3) Agitation (stirred vs. unstirred)

4) Concentration (2.5 g vs. 10 g)

This is a great lab to start off your solubility unit and use an inquiry model to get your students to determine the outcome. I don't even teach this topic "the old fashioned way" this lab does all the teaching for me! I send a student to the front of the room to "play teacher" and share their findings with the class.

FEATURES

  • Low prep
  • "No chemical lab" using sugar and water
  • Versatile: use for scientific inquiry/teaching independent and dependent variables or factors that affect solubility
  • Non-toxic
  • Inquiry lab activity, student led
  • Adapt to a stations lab
  • Differentiate how students write their conclusion
  • Video lab partner for absent students

WHO IS IT FOR?

This lab book is perfect for a first year high school chemistry class if looking to look through the lens of factors that affect solubility.

This can also be a great lab for any early science student looking to investigate independent and dependent variables or the scientific method.

WHAT'S INCLUDED?

  • 2 versions of the lab activity - one geared toward chemistry, factors that affect solubility, and one geared toward early science students, independent & dependent variable and testing variables individually
  • Detailed instructions on How to Write a Chemistry Lab Report that differentiate how students write their conclusions
  • Teacher Version with Answer Key
  • Link to video on YouTube showcasing lab

WHAT MATERIALS ARE NEEDED?

  • Granulated sugar
  • Sugar cubes (2.5 g)
  • Water, both warm and cold
  • Graduated cylinder
  • Balance
  • Beakers
