In this simple intermolecular forces lab, students will drop 3 different liquids on to the surface of a penny and determine the effect of intermolecular forces on surface tension.

 

This green chemistry lab is very low prep and could easily be adapted to a stations lab!

 

WHO IS IT FOR?

  • Students studying their first year of chemistry.

 

HOW TO USE IT

  • Use this lab activity after students have leared the three types of intermolecular forces: hydrogen bonding, dipole-dipole forces and dispersion forces.
  • Use this as an inquiry activity before teaching the effects of intermolecular forces. This will get the gears turning on the relationship between intermolecular force strength and surface tension.
