This separation of mixtures lab activity is a chemist teacher's favorite! Students use a number of techniques to separate a sample of salt and sand.
HOW DO I USE IT?
You create a sample of sand and salt, but don't tell your students how much of each in the mixture. They will separate using filtration and evaporation. You can choose to tell them the measurements if you like, and they do a percent error. Or they can do a percent error based on the original mass.
