This like dissolves like lab activity is a favorite! Easily use as a stations lab, or standard bench lab. Use it before you teach intermolecular forces as an inquiry activity.

HOW DO I USE IT?
Students should already know that water is a polar molecule. Quickly introduce that polar molecules mix with other polar molecules due to charge satisfaction and let them figure out the rest. The lab itself takes about an hour, but with clean up and questions it will take about an hours and a half.

This lab is editable, but is written for water, + food coloring, baby oil, vinegar, mineral oil, rubbing alcohol and aqua sand.

You can adjust this for whatever is in your supply cabinet.

Homemade Aqua Sand Recipe

Hint: I homemade mine, using colored sand from Amazon and waterproof camping spray. I made 3 pounds for a quarter of the price to buy Aqua Sand at the store. Spray and stir in a disposable aluminum pan.

Learn more about the sand recipe or this lab activity in this blog post.
