Hydrate Lab Activity Using Bubble Gum with Quick Calculator for Teacher

This hydrate lab activity is perfect for chemistry teachers without a lab room! That is how I taught it during my first years of teaching, and even though I have a lab room now, I still love and use this activity! Students chew bubble gum to remove sugar instead of removing water from a hydrate.
WHO IS IT FOR?
- This lab is great for first year chemistry students.
FEATURES
- Engaging
- Memorable
- Delicious
- Scientific Writing
- Percent composition calculations
HOW TO USE IT
Teach your students about hydrates. Students take measurements and chew bubble gum. After sugar is dissolved, students take more measurements. Then students complete the calculations - the same as in a typical dehydration lab using a hydrated salt.
