WHO IS IT FOR?

This lesson is perfect for a first year high school chemistry class that takes place over one semester, or teachers looking for a low-math chemistry course.

HOW TO USE IT

I prefer the half page style for printing small and gluing into composition books, but you could also print the full page versions and use packets or binders. I start with the question of the day. Sometimes it is an individual brainstorm question, but I prefer to have my students talk to each other. Then I will spend some time lecturing. I am sure to consistently ask my students questions, or my favorite "turn and teach."

After teaching for 3-5 minutes, students pair up and reteach what they just learned. It's a great way for them to speak or hear the content they've just learned. You'd be surprised how many questions come up!

We finish the lesson with some Show What You Know questions which are included in every lesson of the bundle. Students will usually go to the board in my room and showcase their learning and "be the teacher" for a bit. I sometimes supplement with additional worksheets or lab activities.

Is this resource for middle or high school Chemistry?

This curriculum is designed for a high school chemistry class. Portions of it may be applicable to middle school science teachers. In that case, I recommend shopping a la carte, by lesson or or unit to cherry pick exactly what you need.

Can this be used for Honors and Grade Level students?

This resource was designed to be used for grade level students, teachers looking for a "quicker" chemistry course that is taught in one semester. How will this curriculum help teachers that are new to teaching a Chemistry course?

Teaching is hard. Teaching chemistry is harder. Combing the internet for everything you want and need takes nearly as much time as creating your resources from scratch.

This curriculum was thoughtfully pieced together through years of my own trial and error. I have found a simple way to build on foundational chemistry concepts using a "micro-macro" split. Within the sequencing, I've also integrated spiral review, which makes learning very simple for your students. Each lesson is a small baby step, building slowly up to a comprehensive understanding of chemistry.

As you figure out your teaching, paper flow and classroom management styles, let me handle the curriculum!

How will this curriculum benefit students?

Many chemistry students are simply not interested. Most of my students have been required to take chemistry. For that reason, I initially developed my "Baby Notes." They are short, and to the point, allow for just a few words to be written giving students more time to listen. Lessons are taught in about 15 minutes.

Chemistry can't only be taught in order to be learned. It must also be practiced. Short lessons, self assessment questions and quick practice worksheets are the perfect combination for getting all types of students to not just understand, but also love chemistry.

This curriculum has been successful with grade level, Special Education and English Language Learning students.
